NYALA

Music

Nyala is a group consisting of Pau Li Liem (vocals, piano), Stef Joosten (electric bass) and Jorrit Romme (drums).

Just as their name (Nyala is Indonesian for “flame”) describes, their music is an ever changing and moving concept. It can smolder, with lots of tension, low in dynamic, but it has the possibility of growing into fiery improvisations and compositions. Influenced by this unpredictable quality of flames they strive to find new sounds and explore new ways of interpreting their own compositions.

The starting point can be a fixed composition, pattern or lyric but whenever they start to play it will develop into a new impression of the piece. They are not bound to any genre or style but go into it with an open mind and creativity.

ABOUT NYALA

A melody, a rhythm, a pattern, a lyric, an atmosphere. All of these aspects and more are used in music, solo or combined. Very steady and repetitive or completely free and improvised, like a flame, dancing high and low or staying put for a little while. Casting shadows that show the reality in a completely different way.

Much like a flame, Nyala’s music is an ever changing and moving concept. It can flicker and smolder, with lots of tension, low in dynamic, but it has the possibility of growing into fiery improvisations.

Influenced by this unpredictable quality of flames, they strive to find new sounds and explore new ways of interpreting their own compositions. The starting point can be a fixed composition, pattern or lyric, but whenever they start to play, it will develop into a new impression of the piece.

Jorrit Romme and Pau Li Liem started this project as a duo. They met each other at the conservatory in Tilburg, and they started playing the compositions together, with just piano, vocals and drums. They found that playing together worked, it felt very natural and also fun to play the songs as a duo, but something was still missing and after thinking it over, they approached bass player Stef Joosten.

When they played together as a trio for the first time, it suddenly made sense. The music got an extra layer, Stef’s  improvisations and melodic lines combined with Jorrit’s groove and Pau Li’s lyrical singing and playing added up. It paved the way for a whole new approach of their own compositions.

They are not bound to any genre or style and they all came from a slightly different musical background, but in their music they find each other, going into the music with an open mind and letting the creativity guide them.
